AIMS & SCOPE
This conference is a follow-up to the first three Transfiction conferences held in Vienna (2011), Tel Aviv (2013), and Montreal (2015). Images as translational fictions constructed in and through literary translation will be the main concern of this conference, which means that whether or not translated images can represent reality is not of concern. Originating in Literary Studies, especially in Comparative Literature Studies, imagology investigates cultural stereotypes as presented in literature and focuses initially on literary discourse. Scholars believe that literary canonicity has long-lasting influences on ethnotypical perceptions (Leerssen 2007). The mental images and national identities codified by literary texts, particularly fictional texts, have attracted intense academic interests since imagology was introduced to the study of literature. Although imagological research has been accused of being partial and essentialist and was almost abandoned in the late twentieth century within the field of Comparative Literature Studies, interests in image construction and national stereotyping have been revived in neighboring disciplines like Media Studies, Political Studies, and Cross-cultural Studies in recent years in the context of globalization and as “soft power” has been increasingly considered an influential factor in international relations. Because of its descriptive and transdisciplinary nature, the theoretical and methodological apparatus of imagology has been adopted to explain the mechanism of image building and the power of image in branding and marketing. In the meantime, some translation studies scholars, such as Eva Hung (2005), Helen T. Frank (2007), Reingard M. Nischik (2007), and Luc van Doorslaer (2009, 2010, 2016), have also observed the potential of imagology to enrich translation studies and have started to investigate the construction, deconstruction and reconstruction of image in and through translation. This conference aims to continue these discussions by inviting talks from within and outside of Translation Studies, hoping that the social functions of translational activities, constructive or deconstructive, will be taken into account and foregrounded. Images including verbal, graphical, optical, perceptual, and mental images (Mitchell 1986) in literary texts in various media (fiction, travelogue, film, etc.) are to be taken as imaginary symbols and the translated images are taken as translational fictions. Hence the themes of this conference will include (but are not limited to):
Verbal images in fictional translation
Graphic and optical images in fictional translation
l Multimodality in the translation of images
Stereotyping and fictional translation
l Construction / deconstruction / reconstruction of auto or hetero images in fictional translation
l Influential factors in image construction in fictional translation
SCHEDULE

25 July 2017 Notification of acceptance
PAPER SUBMISSIONS
Authors are invited to submit abstracts by 15 July 2017 will be selected for presentation at the conference by Academic Committee. The notification of acceptance will be sent out on 25 July 2017. It is recommended that accepted presenters send their full papers by 15 October 2017.
After the conference, a number of selected papers passing peer review will be included in one of the two journals: Asia Pacific Translation and Intercultural Studies by Routledge / Taylor & Francis Group and《亚太跨学科翻译研究》 (Asia-Pacific Interdisciplinary Translation Studies), a bilingual journal published by Tsinghua University Press.
